CARSON CITY (AP) — A medical examiner says a Nevada correctional officer’s unexpected death was a homicide related to an inmate attack in December.

Because of that finding released Wednesday, prison officials are asking the attorney general to pursue criminal charges against the inmate involved.

The Nevada Department of Corrections says Officer Tracy Hardin was leaving High Desert State Prison in southern Nevada on Jan. 20 when other staff saw his vehicle swerve off the road.

Hardin was found on the ground. He stopped breathing and died at the scene.

Prison Warden Dwight Neven says Hardin had been assigned to light duty after he was attacked in December and suffered a broken leg and numerous cuts.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as a blood clot directly related to his broken leg.
