Additionally, the commission accepted a $4,100 Library Services and Technology Act Grant for “El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros” (Children’s Day/Book Day). The grant, which has no county match requirement, will be used to purchase multi-cultural materials.
Commissioners also accepted a donation of $500 towards the Washoe County Scholarship Fund. In lieu of gifts, retiring Finance Director John Sherman requested donations be made to the Scholarship Fund. Hobbs, Ong & Associates, Inc. and the PFM Group each donated $250 in Sherman’s name.
Finally, each year agencies participating in the HOME Consortium, which awards grants to qualifying housing projects, are able to self-direct their portion of the total funding to projects of their choosing. Since 2008, Washoe County has consistently chosen not to self-direct their portion of the funding and instead allow the funds to be awarded in a more regional context through the Consortium’s Technical Review Committee and the Regional Planning Governing Board. The funds being returned to the region from Washoe County this year totaled $225,000.
