The school is currently in second place in a contest to win a grant of $30,000 for the upgrade, to be funded by Dolan Automotive Group. The contest ends at 10 p.m. today.
Aron Allee and Sheri McLaughlin were making the rounds to businesses Monday trying to spread the word about the program.
“We need the city of Sparks’ help,” Alee said. “Community involvement helps us raise successful children. This is so important for our school.”
Marvin Moss trailed Fernley Middle School by 131 votes on Monday afternoon.
The Marvin Moss “Extreme Playground Makeover” will include an updated and improved kindergarten and preschool playground. The facility is 20 years old and has never been improved. Some 200 students from the school’s kindergarten, special needs preschool and kindergarten and community partner preschool Small Wonders use the small playground.
Up to 60 students at a time use the equipment. The facility is equipped with four swings, one small monkey bar set and a sand box filled with dirt. The swings are set at a level that is too high for some students and the asphalt is cracked and uneven, resulting in a bumpy surface. This causes daily falls and injuries, according to the school’s description on its Facebook entry.
The grant will enable the school to provide the playground with new fencing, equipment, an eco-friendly surface and a small shed for tricycle storage.
Fernley Intermediate School’s “Fix up Falcon Facilities Playground Upgrade” campaign makes the case that the school’s 600 children have only one piece of playground equipment. Last year, the school changed from a sixth-grade through eighth-grade school to a fifth- and sixth-grade campus. The school plans to purchase playground structures and create a gathering place for students. The school plans to build a swing set, climber, rock wall and seating area. The cost is $10,000.
In order to support Marvin Moss Elementary School’s bid for the upgrade, Allee said, Sparks residents can log onto Facebook and find the Dolan Automotive Group page.
