RENO — At 2 p.m. Saturday, author Jeannie Klerk De-Vries will sign copies of her book “My Mother’s Nightmare: A Holocaust Diary,” at the Barnes & Noble book store at 5555 S. Virginia St. in Reno.

We’ve all heard horror stories of war and suffering, but most of us cannot imagine living through the terrible conditions and fearing for our lives in our own homes. But that is just what brave young Sophia De Vries had to do in war-torn Holland in the 1940s. At the age of 21, Sophia De Vries, wanting to free herself from her parents’ strict rules and become a teacher, left her village of Meppel in Holland, bound for The Hague. Just a few short years later, Hitler and the Holocaust changed Sophia’s life forever. “My Mother’s Nightmare,” taken directly from Sophia’s diary and published posthumously by her daughter, is her story of how she survived and eventually made her way to America to start over.
