RENO — A young man died Sunday after being taken to the hospital with injuries sustained at a makeshift dirt race track.

The unidentified 19-year-old from Reno was at a large gathering earlier Saturday evening near a motocross race track off the dirt extension of Lemmon Drive. At some point he was badly injured and taken by friends to Renown Regional Medical Center, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called to the hospital at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday on a report about the victim, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries. The man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the emergency room.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending a formal identification and notification of next of kin by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Detectives are investigating the death as suspicious pending the results of an autopsy scheduled for this morning. Detectives have interviewed some of the party-goers and are actively seeking anyone with information. Detectives believe many people might have witnessed the events that led to this death and their assistance is needed.

Anyone with information pertinent to this investigation is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 832-WCSO (9276) or remain anonymous by calling Secret Witness at 322-4900.
