LANHAM, Md. — The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced Thursday that Sparks-based Granite Construction Co. has won a 2011 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The company received its award at a special ceremony during the
association’s 57th Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Quality in Construction Award recognizes asphalt pavements of excellence. “NAPA selects the recipients of its paving awards using a known set of standards that have been shown to give a good result,” said Kim Snyder, 2011 chairman of the NAPA board of directors. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work that Granite Construction Co. is achieving.”
Granite Construction Co. won the award for its work on the thin blanket overlay of Highway 70 from milepost 78.4 to 90.5. Despite unseasonably cool temperatures, wind, rain and snow that hampered the first few days of paving, Granite Construction was able to place 19,500 tons of asphalt, produced in a plant an hour away, in seven shifts. The company earned a bonus for the quality of its mixes and produced a smooth, attractive asphalt pavement.
