A loss at Truckee Friday night would have severely damaged the Railroaders' hopes of reaching the postseason. The Maroon and Gold wasn't about to let that happen.

Senior Erik Garcia scored 15 points to lead Sparks on the road to a 61-40 3A Mount Rose League boys prep basketball triumph, a night after a heart-breaking loss.

“I think we rebounded well off of last night, which was an emotional game," Sparks boys basketball coach Dan Schreiber said. "The kids knew the importance of this game. We’ve been stressing the importance of winning away, especially Truckee. It’s always a hard place to play.”

Xavier Rodriguez added 11 points in the win. D.J. Devine and Brian Morgan each added 10, while Eli Martinez had eight.

Sparks (14-5, 3-2) heads to Incline Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

•On the girls side, Sparks competed early on, but was held scoreless in the third quarter as the Wolverines cruised to a 52-19 win.

The Railroaders trailed 24-14 at halftime.

Stephanie Parker hit three 3-pointers — all in second quarter — for a team-high nine points in the losing cause.

For Truckee, Aleigh Krug had 20 points and Krysta Murphy 13.
