RENO — The expense of a pet is one of the many stresses we all share during the holiday season, but one that you can avoid with a little forethought. Consider cutting your pet expenses by looking at your spending habits, and you’ll be so “ho-ho happy” you did.

Use this festive season to make a pet plan; your family pets do not have to cost a fortune. Here are eight tips that will help you set the tone for 2012 with a new furry family member or all the beloved pets you already own:

1. Research, research, research. If you’re thinking about getting a new pet, first figure out what the price and basic needs will cost you. You might discover that certain pets are not in your budget right now.

2. Adopt from a rescue organization. You will be saving a pet from an uncertain future, and you will pay less for a new pet that is already fixed, de-clawed and had all shots. 

3. Shop around for the very best veterinarian at the best price. Choose one with the expertise your pet requires. 

4. If you already have a veterinarian, check the office’s bulletin board. Other clients might freely offer you their animal if they know he or she is going to a good home, thus saving you the initial cost of a pet.

5. Learn to groom your own pet. You can carefully trim nails, and wash and cut hair at home. 

6. If you are loyal to a pet food brand, then you should visit the company’s website and sign up for its special coupons and offers.

7. Buy recycled toys from charity shops for your pet; these can be an inexpensive alternative to the new pricey, pet shop toys.

8. If you are traveling, instead of taking on the added expense of a pet sitter, look for pet-friendly hotels or other accommodations and take your pet with you. Save money and get the added benefit of stress-relief that your pet provides at the holidays.
