SPARKS — The City Council on Monday approved the use of $632,000 for projects identified in the Capital Projects Fund 1404 for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

In May, the council approved the proposed fiscal year 2011-12 Capital Improvement Projects, which included about $1.2 million in possible expenditures for Capital Projects Fund 1404. At that meeting, the council provided direction that three of the 12 identified projects could proceed until a better financial picture of the city’s ending General Fund balance could be determined.

Previously authorized 1404 funded projects include the Alf Sorensen Community Center pool exhaust fan/dehumidifier project; the Little League bathroom project at Golden Eagle Regional Park; and an IT technical refresh program.

Newly authorized projects include replacing the HVAC compressor and a bathroom remodel at City Hall; lighting retrofit projects at the police department and Victorian Square parking garage; and disability access improvements to city facilities.

In other news, a first reading was made of an amendment to the municipal code that would direct revenue from the Sparks Police Department’s false alarm program into the city’s general fund.

The proposed ordinance shifts the annual revenue from fees assessed under the SPD’s false alarm reduction program from the SPD to the city’s general fund. This revenue has been sporadically applied to the city’s general fund in past years, according to staff reports.

Possible adoption of the new ordinance could come as soon as Dec. 12.

Finally, the City Council approved the appointment of George Myers and Steven Schiller to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
