RENO — Police responded to several vehicle burglaries Saturday in the area where last week’s Caughlin Ranch fire burned more than 30 homes.

At about 9:06 a.m., the Reno Police Department responded to the areas of Skyline Drive, Pioneer Drive and Dant Boulevard on a report of vehicle burglaries. The investigation revealed that several suspects were forcibly entering vehicles, removing numerous items and then discarding unwanted items in the area. Officers recovered numerous items of personal property in the area and are in the process of identifying and contacting possible victims.

Based on the nature of some the recovered items, it appears the suspects might be targeting vehicles belonging to victims who are storing personal belongings in their vehicles as a result of the Caughlin fire.

The Reno Police Department reminds citizens that vehicles should not be considered a secure place to store items of value or documents that contain personal identifying information.

Citizens are advised to close car windows and lock car doors, park in well-lit areas close buildings and always remove loose valuables from the vehicle. If electronics must be stores in a vehicle, keep a list of item serial numbers.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Reno Police Department Detective Division at 334-2115, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
