County Manager Katy Simon told the Reno Gazette-Journal that their positions are being eliminated, and more staff cuts are looming to help deal with an estimated $6.8 million budget shortfall.
She says by the end of December, another 19 employees will be laid off, and at least 40 vacant positions will not be filled.
The buyouts of the 86 employees will cost the county an estimated $5.6 million, primarily by buying years of service to boost pension plans. The cost averages $65,116 per employee.
The annual savings in eliminating the 86 positions totals $11.2 million.
