SPARKS — A 35-year-old Reno resident was killed Saturday night when he tried to cross a busy street in a dimly lit area.

Dennis Holland of Reno was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center after being discovered by police lying on McCarran Boulevard near Kresge Lane. Officers had responded to a call about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle at 8:52 p.m. Holland was unresponsive when he was found on the side of the road by officers.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Holland stayed on scene and was not injured, according to police. The initial investigation indicates that Holland was trying to cross McCarran Boulevard in an eastbound direction in a dimly lit area where there are no crosswalks. The 36-year-old Sparks resident who was driving the black 1988 Nissan pick-up truck that struck Holland was traveling north on McCarran and did not see Holland until the collision occurred. Investigators believe that alcohol might have played a role in this crash and are awaiting toxicology reports on both Holland and the driver of the vehicle.

The northbound lanes of McCarran Boulevard near Kresge Lane were closed for about three hours so investigators could process the scene.

The Sparks Police Department is asking anyone who might have seen the accident, or who may have seen Holland or the Nissan pick-up prior to the accident, to call 353-2432 or 353-2225. To remain anonymous, call Secret Witness at 322-4900.
