“The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is pleased to accept this prestigious award as it represents the tireless work of many individuals who have worked over the years on this project,” Tribal Chairman Wayne Burke said. “Over the past 21 years, the tribe had tried seven times to adopt a plan for economic development but was unsuccessful because of a lack of a community-embraced vision for economic development on the reservation. The Pyramid Lake Economic Development Plan is a great example of embracing a community vision in order to create the foundation to improve the quality of life for the members of the tribe today and in the future.”
The Pyramid Lake Economic Development Plan was written by tribal planner Scott H. Carey and was adopted unanimously by the Tribal Council in March. The purpose of the plan is to create long-term, profit-making opportunities and optimum employment opportunities for the tribe and its members, and to establish a high-quality recreation area at Pyramid Lake. Each element of the plan consists of generalized goals, policies and action steps that the tribal government can use to create jobs and growth on the reservation. The plan also outlines the use of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Economic Development Fund created by Public Law 101-618 to achieve the goals of the plan.
“I would like to thank U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and his staff for their support and I am grateful to all of the other federal agencies who have helped the tribe adopt this plan,” Burke said. “The tribe looks forward to being able to utilize its economic development fund to create long-term jobs and growth on the reservation.”
