RENO — A 71-year-old man from California was killed Saturday when he was hit by two cars while crossing the street.

Charles Heinemann, a resident of Sonora, Calif., was crossing North Virginia Street at Eighth Street at 5:38 p.m. on a green light in a crosswalk when he was struck by a car exiting the freeway that was turning left onto southbound Virginia Street. A second vehicle, also making a left turn, also struck Heinemann. The victim was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center where he died.

The drivers of the two vehicles were cooperative with the investigation. The first driver, 20-year-old Reno resident Cesar Bernal-Cuadra, was suspected of being under the influence of marijuana and was booked for DUI (drugs) causing death and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Reno Police Department Traffic Division at 334-2141, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
