Gregory Mathis, 54, was found dead in his apartment at 565 Sparks Blvd. #144 on the evening of Oct. 9 after police received a 911 call. While investigating the incident, police discovered that Mathis’ car was missing.
An alert was issued for the missing vehicle, where it was spotted the next day by police in West Wendover being driven by 38-year-old Sparks resident Michael Giesbrecht.
Also a fugitive from the law in Idaho, Giesbrecht is being held in Elko County and is expected to be transferred to Sparks later this week on a murder charge.
Sparks police Lt. Tom Miller said Monday that Mathis was a retired truck driver with no recent arrest record. The connection between Mathis and Giesbrecht is still under investigation by police.
