The public is invited to attend the event marking the milestone for Mount Rose Elementary School in Reno.
The school, built in a Mission Revival architectural style, has educated children in Reno’s southwest and downtown neighborhoods.
A group of citizen activists persuaded the school board in the 1980s to renovate the school instead of closing and razing it.
Current and former students and teachers at Mount Rose will attend the picnic, which will be held from noon to 4 p.m. today at the school.
The celebration also will include sack races, a melon-eating contest and an open house with displays depicting events from the era when the school was built.
