SPARKS — Firefighters were overwhelmed by the charity witnessed during the 2011 Muscular Dystrophy Association event this past week.

MDA donations to “Fill the Boot” were taken from Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 at two locations in Sparks: the Nugget Rib Cook-Off on Victorian Avenue and the Sparks Mercantile Center at the corner of North McCarran Boulevard and Pyramid Way. Between the two locations, a total of $22,046 was collected.

“I was overwhelmed by the level of support given by the public during these tough economic times,” said firefighter Jarrod Stewart, who is the MDA coordinator for the Sparks Fire Department. He went on to compliment both the department and the Sparks firefighters for the support they gave. About 20 off-duty personnel volunteered at the rib cook-off, and the department made a commitment to schedule on-duty companies at the Mercantile Center.

The MDA event was a coordinated effort between the Sparks Fire Department and the Sparks Firefighters Local 1265, as on-duty engine companies were rotated to staff the boot at the Mercantile Center and off-duty 1265 members volunteered to staff the boot during the rib cook-off.
