The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is part of a national movement to raise awareness and take action to help the 50 million Americans who experience hunger and September is Hunger Action Month.
The official kick-off of the September Great Tuna Challenge will be at the Reno Aces Game Friday, Sept. 2 when the Aces take on the Tucson Padres before heading into the post-season playoffs. The kick-off is sponsored by U.S. Foodservice. Bring cans of tuna and receive a coupon for restaurant offers as well for discounts on Aces merchandise in the gift shop.

Throughout the month, Feeding America’s nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, including Food Bank of Northern Nevada, is working to engage citizens to take action and help spread the word about how pervasive hunger is in every community. The Hunger Action Month calendar is a full one for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Some of the ways that will be available to participate will be a region wide canned tuna food drive, numerous volunteer opportunities, a Yogurt Beach Fundraiser (Sept. 15), Cool Blues and Hot Thai Fundraiser at Café de Thai (Sept. 22), a Jen Chapin Concert (Sept. 29) at Sparks’ Great Basin Brewery, a where’s the “Hunger a la Cart” Facebook contest, and many more.
The organization has worked with Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office to officially declare September Hunger Action Month in the State of Nevada. Public declarations of Hunger Action Month in northern Nevada have also been made by the city of Reno, the city of Sparks and Washoe County.
The Food Bank of Northern Nevada will be inviting their supporters to share our celebrity video campaign that tells the real stories of Americans struggling with hunger. The final way that the Food Bank of Northern Nevada will participate in Hunger Action Month is the 30 Ways in 30 Days campaign providing individuals exciting ways to participate in September, every day. Hunger is a very serious issue right here in Nevada. One in five children in Nevada live in a home where there is not enough food for three meals per day, and one in six people in Nevada needs to seek food assistance and may tap the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to keep food on the table for their families.
