WINNEMUCCA — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District will implement temporary closures and restrictions of certain activities on public lands within and adjacent to the Smoke Creek Desert within the Black Rock Field Office. The closures and restrictions are necessary to provide for public safety and to protect public resources. The temporary closures will be in effect between Aug. 29 and Sept. 6.
“Similar closures in past years have been implemented with minimal disruption to other public uses,” said Black Rock Field Manager Rolando Mendez. “The temporary closures do not restrict people from recreating and camping in the closure area.”
The restricted activities include possession and use of fireworks without prior authorization; possession of drug paraphernalia; disorderly conduct; driving while under the influence of alcohol and possession or use of alcohol by minors; ignition of fires without a burn blanket or burn pan; dumping or discharge of waste (grey) water; possession and/or discharge of any weapon while under the influence of alcohol.
The closure area covers 109,440 acres and is about 20 to 25 miles southwest of Gerlach.
