MDA donations to Fill-the-Boot will be taken from two locations this year:
• At the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off on the corner of Victorian Avenue and E. Victorian Plaza from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sunday (look for the Sparks Fire Department aerial truck and U.S. flag).
• At the Sparks Mercantile Center at the corner of N. McCarran Boulevard and Pyramid Way from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Participation in this year’s event is a coordinated effort between the Sparks Fire Department and the Sparks Firefighters Local 1265 as on-duty engine companies will be rotated to staff the boot at the Mercantile Center and off-duty 1265 members have volunteered to staff the boot during the rib cook-off.
MDA T-shirts will be available for $20 at both locations.
A total of $19,500 was collected through public donations at these two locations last year. In the past 50 years, the International Association of Fire Fighters has raised more than $500 billion nationwide for the MDA.
The MDA provides several services for families in the local area, including support groups, diagnostics, doctor visits, clinics, equipment repair, an equipment loan closet (for wheelchairs, etc.) and a summer camp. At the 4-H Camp in South Lake Tahoe, the children are able to participate in many activities they would not normally be able to do, including power soccer, adaptive yoga, beach activities such as boating, swimming and water fights, derby car racing, prom night, bingo, story time by professional story tellers and ice cream socials. It costs $800 for one child to attend the 4H Camp in South Lake Tahoe.
