SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning by a driver who was arrested for driving under the influence.

At 1:17 a.m. Saturday, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol, an unregistered silver Ford truck driven by David Ray Stephenson, from Discovery Bay, Calif. was traveling east on U.S. 50 when it struck Joan Marie Hamrick, who was crossing U.S. 50 from the Horizon Casino Resort to MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa in the crosswalk. Stephenson left the scene of the accident but a witness followed him to Kahle Drive. The unoccupied truck was located later and while officers were at the truck, Stephenson came and was arrested for felony DUI and due care.

Hamrick sustained substantial injuries and was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno via Care Flight helicopter. She later died from her injuries.

NHP’s Major Accident Investigation Team will be investigating the accident. Witnesses to the event, or anyone with additional information, should contact Sgt. Scott Famer at 775-689-4623 regarding case number NHP-1107300046.
