RENO — Police dismantled a device thought to be a possible explosive but that turned out to be nothing.

At 12:44 p.m. Tuesday, the manager of the El Cortez Hotel, located at 239 W. Second St., told police that one of the residents brought a strange-looking device into his room. The entire hotel was evacuated as a precaution.

The Consolidated Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit responded and dismantled the device, which was determined to not have an explosive capability. The device did create a fire hazard but was rendered safe by police and the residents were allowed to go back to their homes. The person responsible for creating the device is not being charged at this time.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Reno Police Department Detective Division at 334-2115, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
