RENO — The Nevada Highway Patrol was notified Thursday morning that 16-year-old Kody L. Wilson died at Renown Regional Medical Center at 8:02 a.m. Tuesday from the injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident last week. Troopers from Major Accident Investigation Team are still investigating the accident that occurred at 1:30 p.m. on June 28 on U.S. 395 near Industrial Way in Douglas County.
Witnesses that day said Kody was riding his blue bicycle south in the center storage/turn lane prior to the accident. The speed limit on this section of the four-lane highway is 55 mph. Moments before the accident, Kody steered his bike in a southwesterly direction and apparently wanted to cross both southbound lanes. Also traveling south in the right travel lane near the accident location was a 2003 Ford F-450 service truck owned by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), driven by 51-year-old Edward B. Shope of Gardnerville.
Shope applied the brakes and steered to the right in an effort to avoid a collision as Kody entered the lane. The bike struck the left side of the truck near the front fender resulting in Kody being thrown to the pavement.
He was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight. Shope was not injured. Witnesses with additional information should contact Trooper Mike Stapledon at 775-689-4623 regarding case number NHP-1106281098.
