RENO — “Hero status isn’t reserved for only the brave men and women who rush into burning buildings or step into the front lines of war,” said Steve Thomas, donor recruitment director for United Blood Services (UBS), the area’s non-profit community blood service provider. “Ordinary people are saving lives every day. They do it while they are on lunch break or while they are running errands. They have found the hero in themselves by donating blood.”
For this reason, UBS is encouraging all eligible blood donors to consider donating on Wednesday at any one of three community donation centers for the organization’s Summer Barbecue Special Event.
“We want all eligible blood donors in our community to be aware of our need for blood donations, and we have developed an excellent summer promotion to help us accomplish this objective with our Driving for Donors V Summer Promotion,” said Lisa Rogers, who is the donor recruitment supervisor for UBS. “From now through Sept. 10 all presenting donors will be able to enter our raffle to win a beautiful Toyota Corolla that is being provided in partnership with the Northern Nevada Toyota Dealers.”
Potential donors can make an appointment to give at www.bloodhero.com or by calling 324-6454 to attend this special event. Donors will receive a free cholesterol test with every donation.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
UBS of Reno is the sole blood products supplier to 20 hospitals in northern Nevada. About 150 blood donations are needed every day to meet the increasing demand for red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
