We have all heard about our “war on terror” but this was just a diversion for the fascists among us to get control of our democracy. What am I talking about? What fascists and how are they getting control? It is happening right before our very eyes.

American fascists are most easily recognizable by their deliberate perversion of the truth and fact. The newspapers under their control carefully cultivate propaganda to create fear and impugn democracy. They claim to be super patriots but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are spokesmen for monopolies and vested interests. Their final objective is to capture political power to use the power of the state and the market simultaneously so that they may keep the common man in eternal subjugation.

These statements are not new but were made by Vice President Wallace in 1944. He also stated that there were probably several hundred thousand fascists in America at that time. They were business leaders who put money and power ahead of human beings and were ruthless and deceitful.

Sound like anyone you know? Bush and Cheney have been doing this for the past seven years. They perpetuate a state of fear by stating that the terrorists are coming. If you don’t agree with them then you are not a patriot. They have lied and deceived us all. They have eroded our civil rights and taken away some of our basic liberties. Bush and Cheney speak of “free trade” but support oil monopolies. And they have manipulated the market with high gas prices to subjugate the common man.

Sixty four years ago this was a problem and it is even worse now. In 1944 the fascists were defeated in Italy and contained in the United States. Now we have to restore our democracy once again.

How do we do this? What can an individual do? The answer is simple. Speak up and be heard and vote.

Hitler and Mussolini didn’t gain control of their countries overnight. It took them several years to erode away their countries’ civil rights and democratic processes finally allowing them to seize control. It can happen here in America too.

Our democracy requires effort from each and every citizen. The best way to support our democracy is to vote in every election. The upcoming election is critical both locally and nationally. We have to turn off the road to fascism and take the path to a true democracy.
