MOBILE, Ala. — Mandi Brooksbank of Reno arrived in Mobile on June 12 to participate in the 54th Distinguished Young Women National Finals. Brooksbank is one of 50 state representatives competing for a share of $142,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2011.

The 50 state representatives were welcomed to Mobile with an arrival ceremony kicking off two weeks of events, activities and rehearsals leading up to the national finals to be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Mobile Civic Center Theater. Brooksbank was greeted by her host family, with which she will “live” for the next two weeks, a tradition dating back to the start program. She was also welcomed by city officials, program sponsors and a local Girl Scout troop participating in the “Adopt a Distinguished Young Woman” program.

“The mission of Distinguished Young Women is to provide a life-enhancing experience for our participants that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments,” said Becky Jo Peterson, executive director of Distinguished Young Women.

Over the next two weeks, the state representatives will participate in team-building activities, complete community service projects and interact with the Gulf Coast community through various events.
