SPARKS — The Sparks Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting Hershey’s Track and Field Games’ state qualifying meet on June 25 at the Northern Nevada Regional Track Facility at Reed High School. Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the free program designed to encourage physical fitness and emphasize participation and sportsmanship. Pre-registration is required by June 23 at the Recreation Office, 98 Richards Way.

Check-in on the day of the games begins at 8 a.m. with the meet beginning at 9 a.m. Events include the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, 4 x 100-meter relay, standing long jump and softball throw. Certificates are given to every participant, and ribbons are awarded to the top eight male and female finishers in each event.

First place finishers in each age division will be placed in a regional pool of state finalists eligible to be selected for a regional team which travels to Hershey, Penn. (all expenses paid), to compete in the North American final later in the summer. All regional winners will qualify for the meet.

Participants and spectators are asked to donate worn-out athletic shoes at the Sparks event for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. Shoes collected will be recycled into Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces, as well as select Nike products.

More than 400,000 children participate annually in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games through local, district, state and provincial track and field meets held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.
