TACOMA, Wash. — Solo home runs by Tony Abreu and Brandon Allen helped give Reno an early lead that would stand up, as the Aces won their third-straight game Thursday night, 5-2, over the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium.

Reno scored in the first, second and fourth innings to take an early 3-0 lead on the evening. The Rainiers managed to draw to within a run in the seventh, but they would get no closer as the Aces secured a series victory and put themselves in position for a sweep on Friday.

Aces starter Tom Layne (6-1) earned the victory, holding Tacoma to a run on eight hits over five innings of work. Kyler Newby surrendered an unearned run in two innings, Kam Mickolio worked a scoreless eighth and—for the second-straight night—Bryan Shaw slammed the door in the ninth.

At the plate for Reno Thursday, Allen, Evan Frey, Collin Cowgill and Cole Gillespie all finished with two hits. Gillespie doubled and drove in two as part of a nine-hit Aces effort.

The loss fell to Tacoma starter Nate Robertson (0-1), who surrendered three runs on six hits over six frames.

The first-place Aces go for the sweep of Tacoma Friday night night. RHP Armando Galarraga (0-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Tacoma counters with LHP Chris Seddon (1-3, 5.91 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT from Cheney Stadium, and all the action can be heard live in Reno on Fox Sports Radio 630 AM or online at RenoAces.com.

The Aces return home Saturday at 7:05 p.m. PT for a four-game set against the Salt Lake Bees.
