DOUGLAS COUNTY — The person killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle rollover crash six miles south of Gardnerville has been identified as 26-year-old Emilio Vargas-Gonzales of Carson City.

On Sunday at 5:14 am, Vargas-Gonzales crashed his 1998 Dodge Durango on U.S. 395 near Courtland Lane. According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Vargas-Gonzales was driving at a high rate of speed when his SUV drifted off the right roadway edge. He over-corrected to the left and once again to the right. The vehicle skidded off the road and traveled about 40 feet down an embankment where it rolled over multiple times before coming to rest on its wheels.

Vargas-Gonzales was thrown from the vehicle. He died at the scene. His passenger, 34-year-old Francisco J. Curiel-Caro of Reno, was seat belted and remained inside the vehicle during the crash. He was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Family members of both motorists were notified Sunday afternoon. Curiel-Caro’s condition was not known Monday morning.

It is unknown this morning if alcohol was a contributing factor. Witnesses or anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact Trooper Robert Haigney at 775-689-4682 regarding case number NHP-1105220105.
