The latest of those came Thursday in a 13-10 home defeat at the hands of McQueen.
Spanish Springs hurt its cause by falling behind 5-0 after just the first half inning of play. McQueen pushed across its five runs in the first on just three hits. The Lancers got some help as SSHS pitching issued five walks in the initial frame.
The Cougars did not score in their half of the first but they did begin chipping away at the MHS advantage. The hosts eventually took a 10-7 lead after the fifth. Unfortunately for the SSHS nine, McQueen rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth to steal the comeback win.
Down 5-0, Spanish Springs got back-to-back solo home runs from Matt Mannens and Kyle Clarke, making the score 5-2.
The Cougars trailed 6-3 as it they came up for their turn in the fourth. Tanner Oates hit a two-run double in the fourth as Spanish Springs got back to within one run.
Oates then hit a three-run dinger in the fifth to key a five-run Spanish Springs rally, which left the home team ahead, 10-7.
“At one point, we came back to take the lead, but like anything else, it takes so much energy to come back,” Spanish Springs coach Ben Hofmann said. “They strung a couple hits together in the sixth and that took the wind right out of us … The kids played really hard. We would have liked to have gotten off to a better start, but we battled through the whole game. I can’t take anything away from our effort.”
Spanish Springs falls to 21-8 on the year with the loss and 12-7 in league play. The Cougars sit in a three-way tie for third place with Manogue and Carson, who are also 12-7 in conference tilts.
The Cougars regular season ends today when they host McQueen at Aces Ballpark. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Admission is free.
“It’s our senior night. It should be fun,” Hofmann said. “Last year we had 1,000 people or so there and we want to get more this year.
“We really wanted this week to get some momentum going into (next week’s) playoffs. It has not quite worked out that way. We need to win to hold down the No. 3 or 4 seed.”
