SPARKS — On Saturday, the Sparks Police Department conducted age verification compliance checks at eight local businesses that sell alcoholic beverages. Sparks police officers, with the assistance of two volunteers who were under 21 years of age, attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages from those establishments. Six of the businesses sold alcohol to the minor.

Businesses in compliance were: Elbow Room, 2002 Victorian Ave.; JB Liquor, 538 Greenbrae Drive.

Businesses not in compliance were: Sparks Food and Liquor, 2004 Victorian Ave.; Dollar Plus and Mini Mart, 660 Greenbrae Drive; Playhouse Lounge, 1746 Victorian Ave.; Coconut Bowl, 1855 E. Lincoln Way.; Paddy and Irenes Irish Pub, 906 Victorian Ave.; Victorian RV Park, 205 Nichols Blvd.

A citation was issued to the employees for selling an alcoholic beverage to a minor. The fine for this offense is a minimum of $632. Such an offense can also jeopardize the establishment’s license to sell alcohol.

Citizens are asked to report to their local police agency the sales of alcohol to minors, possession of alcohol by minors or other violations of the laws regarding the use of alcohol by minors.
