RENO, Nev. — Six Aces hitters recorded two hits Sunday afternoon, as Reno took the series finale, 10-8, to split a four-game set with Tacoma at Aces Ballpark.

Tacoma jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three frames, but the Aces answered with nine runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Tom Layne (2-1) kept Reno in the game with 3 1-3 innings of relief, while the Aces offense continued its torrid pace to begin the season.

Reno pulled away in the fifth, scoring six runs while flipping a 5-4 deficit into a 10-4 lead. In the frame, Reno’s six runs came on just three hits, including two-run doubles by Robby Hammock and Cole Gillespie.

Layne earned his second win of the season in relief of Aces starter Kyler Newby, who was lifted after allowing four earned runs in 2 2-3 innings. Ron Mahay, Rafael Rodriguez and Kam Mickolio each tossed an inning of relief to preserve the victory for the Aces.

The loss went to Rainiers starter Chaz Roe (0-2), who surrendered nine earned runs on nine hits in 4 2-3 innings of work.

In addition to Hammock and Gillespie collecting two RBIs apiece, Andy Tracy and David Winfree each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Collin Cowgill continued his hot hitting, recording two hits and raising his team-leading batting average to .392.

The Aces now hit the road for eight-straight, beginning with a four-game set against the Las Vegas 51s in the renewal of the vaunted Silver State Diamond Challenge. In today’s opener, LHP Zach Kroenke (3-0, 4.76 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Las Vegas will counter with RHP Michael MacDonald (1-0, 3.72). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM in Reno or online at

Reno returns home on Tuesday, May 10, for an eight-game homestand against the Omaha Storm Chasers and Iowa Cubs.
