Clinging to a one-run lead through four innings, the Grizzlies exploded for eight runs on four hits in the fifth inning — including a Travis Ishikawa grand slam — that propelled them to a series-evening victory.
Fresno roughed up Aces starter Kevin Mulvey (1-2) for 10 runs on 11 hits over 4 1-3 innings. Tom Layne surrendered two runs over 2 2-3 innings of work before Ron Mahay silenced the Grizzlies in his lone inning of work.
At the plate for the Aces, Cowgill hit a solo homer in the third and later added his first-career Triple-A triple. Cody Ransom hit a three-run homer in the sixth, while John Hester and David Winfree chipped in two hits apiece.
The Grizzlies collected 17 hits on the day, with the first seven batters in the order all recording at least two. Ishikawa drove in five, Ryan Rohlinger knocked in three and Thomas Neal and Edgar Gonzalez finished with three hits apiece.
The win went to Fresno starter Matt Yourkin (1-2), who scattered four runs on six hits over 5 1-3 innings of work. Yourkin walked three and struck out six. Three Fresno relievers combined to hold Reno to a run on four hits over the final 3 2-3 innings.
The Aces and Grizzlies hit the third leg of this four-game set tonight at Chukchansi Park.
