RENO — The Washoe County School District (WCSD) School Police will host five visitors from Ukraine to explore American social services practices for young people starting today.

A group of educators from Ukraine, invited to the United States as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program, will become acquainted with American practices of providing social services to youth.

The WCSD School Police will meet with the visitors for about an hour and then take the educators on a tour of some middle and high schools to show how the district implements policies on bullying, safety, emergency management, lockdowns and drug- and alcohol-related issues.

“It’s a great honor to have another country look at our district’s bullying prevention efforts and safety,” WCSD Police Chief Mike Mieras said. “We hope, from this experience, they will be able to take back to their school system some specific strategies they can use to help the children and youth of their country.”

The participants from Ukraine specialize in specific areas of educational and social services. As they visit school districts in the United States, they will be exposed to innovative practices in advocacy, leadership and social change; promotion of healthy lifestyles, including HIV/AIDS prevention; volunteerism; children, youth and family services; programs that help vulnerable youth including street orphans and children with special needs; community mental health; health care and school social work. The International Visitor Leadership Program also allows participants to experience American society and its geographic and cultural diversity.

The five visitors who will be joining School Police include an English teacher, a director of youth and sport, lead specialist with the Center of Social Services for Family, Children and Youth, a social worker and the head of the Department of Social Services in Ukraine.
