Wily Mo Peña hit his fifth home run in eight games, a two-run shot to dead center in the bottom of the first that gave Reno a 2-1 lead. Reno tacked on one run in each of the next four frames to give it a 6-5 lead, but the Sky Sox tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Chris Nelson.
The Aces took the lead for good in the home half of the eighth, as they tagged losing pitcher Eric Stults (0-1) for three runs—two earned—in the frame. Konrad Schmidt drove in the go-ahead run with a ground-rule double to right-center field, and Josh Wilson added two insurance runs with a two-run single, giving Reno a three-run cushion.
Jordan Norberto (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings of hitless ball, striking out two and walking one. Kyler Newby started and went four innings in his first Triple-A appearance, allowing five hits, two runs and striking out five batters. Rafael Rodriguez threw a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
Stults took the loss in relief of Sky Sox starter Billy Buckner, who surrendered 10 hits and six runs—all earned—in five innings of work.
Wilson finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Schmidt went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Brandon Allen and Tony Abreu chipped in with two hits apiece as well.
