RENO — Washoe County commissioners will begin the second of three budget hearings at 9 a.m. today in the legislative chambers located at 1001 E. Ninth St. in Reno.

The Board of County Commissioners will hear presentations from several county departments about their share of $5 million in cuts needed to cover a minimum $33.5 million budget deficit for the next fiscal year, beginning July 1.

Departments that provide core county services have been directed to reduce their budgets by 1.7 percent, while administration will cut 2 percent and noncore services 3.7 percent.

Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed state budget would drive up the county’s deficit by $25 million, but scenarios that would address this additional impact will not be heard until a final state budget is approved.

Presentations will continue at 9 a.m. on April 18. Each hearing can be viewed live online at and on the Washoe Channel TV-217.

Departments are scheduled to make 20-minute presentations at the following times:

Clerk: 9 a.m.

Registrar of Voters: 9:20 a.m.

Recorder: 9:40 a.m.

Assessor: 10 a.m.

Treasurer: 10:20 a.m.

Human Resources: 10:40 a.m.

All times are subject to change and certain department presentations might run longer than their allotted time.
