The Sparks Railroaders were handed four lopsided losses in Day 1 action at the Lassen High softball tournament in Susanville Friday. Still, SHS coach Frank Avilla said there was reason to be optimistic.

“There were a lot of bright spots,” Avilla said. “Krystal Barker had three triples. Gabby Durante had two doubles and two triples. Good things are happening. We are green and young, but we are competing.

“We’re growing as a team and the more games we get, the better we’ll be.”

On Friday, Sparks lost to Lassen 11-1 and Red Bluff 12-1. The Railroaders also were handed losses of 10-0 and 8-1 by Anderson and Enterprise of Redding, Calif.

In the three of the four defeats, Sparks gave up single-inning rallies of six or more runs to their opponents.

“One big inning is hurting us,” Avilla said. “But the scores don’t show how we played. If you take away a hit here and an error there, we’re right in the game. But we are cleaning up some areas. For instance we only gave up eight walks in four games today.”

Sparks was set to play a league doubleheader against North Tahoe at home today, but the Lake school forfeited those contests. Instead Sparks will go back to Susanville for Day 2 of the tournament.
