A day after it was plagued by poor pitching and anemic hitting, the Sparks Railroaders looked like a different team. Sparks was handed a 10-run mercy-rule defeat by Fallon Friday but the SHS crew bounced back in a big way to post a pair of wins Saturday. Sparks beat Fernley 7-3 and then knocked off a previously unbeaten Dayton squad, 9-3.

Both of the non-league Northern 3A crossover games were played in Fallon.

Against Fernley, Sparks broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the second. Kirk Putman singled and Joe Christ walked. Both scored on a Tyler Dresbach double. Dresbach later scored on a Kieffer Putman single.

Sparks extended its advantage to 5-1 by tacking on two more runs in the third. Dennis Morelli launched a solo homer. Next, Kirk Putman doubled and scored on a Dresbach double.

The Railroaders added single scores in the fourth and fifth frames to put the Vaqueros away.

Dresbach worked all seven innings on the hill for Sparks to pick up the complete-game victory. He allowed only two hits while striking out three and walking two.

In Game 2, Sparks broke open a close contest in the fourth inning. The Railroaders led 3-2 but pushed across six runs in the tell-tale fourth.

Dresbach had two singles and Quinn Lightfoot had a single in the rally while Martin Jordan, Brandon Harris and Kirk Putman all rapped out doubles in the inning.

Putman had an up and down pitching performance but he still managed to avoid giving up a big inning to Dayton. In the end, he got the complete-game win. He limited Dayton to six hits and overcame seven walks while striking out three.

“Those were quality wins,” Sparks coach Greg Vasko said. “Our pitchers bent, but didn’t break. The difference today was we hit the ball well. We had people on base and we were able to score them.”

Sparks improved to 5-5 overall. The Railroaders play again next Saturday in a doubleheader against North Tahoe.
