With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bella Rovens collected her third hit of the game and drove in the winning run in the Cougars’ 3-2 triumph.
“It was great. It showed a lot that the team didn’t give up and kept battling,” SSHS softball coach Jeff Davidson said. “That’s all you can ask. I was very pleased with how they came back and answered every challenge.”
Spanish Springs took an initial 1-0 lead on Dani Smith’s RBI single in the bottom of the third.
The Greenwave tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, but Rovens put the hosts back on top with the first of her two RBI base knocks in the bottom half of the fifth.
However, Fallon answered with its final run in the sixth to knot the game at 2-2, setting up an exciting bottom of the seventh.
Kayla Arterburn led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, the Cougars’ only extra base hit of the game. A sacrifice bunt moved her up to third base, and Rovens drove her home with a single past third base.
Danica Arterburn ended up picking up the win in the circle by pitching two innings of relief. Kaytlin Ripa pitched the first five frames, combining with Danica Arterburn on a four-hitter.
Rovens was 3-for-4 for the Purple and Silver and Kayla Arterburn added two hits in the win.
Spanish Springs (9-2) is back in action at home Thursday against Douglas. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
