They did it! The University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack football team beat Boston College 20-13 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl game in San Francisco on Sunday night. I’m more than likely not the first person to tell you that, but I needed to preface everything else I wanted to say with that sentence.

Sunday night, during the game, you could have held cannon practice on many local streets as the traffic was diminished considerably because everyone was indoors watching the game on ESPN or had gone to the game by air, car or in one of the convoys of buses.

It was reported that 25,000 Reno fans were at the game and many more thousands I’m sure watched it on television. The crowd in AT&T Park actually formed what amounted to the 12th man on the team for UNR. The crowd was enlivened, to put it mildly. What a great bunch of fans this team has.

Kraft has awarded a prize to the Reno area because UNR fans sent in the most text messages in a contest to see which area had the most fan support. The prize for winning that contest was that 20,000 meals will be awarded to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. That in itself was reason to support the Wolf Pack football team. What a great bunch of fans UNR has.

Those UNR football team members can just about walk on water as far as the fans are concerned today after having won this bowl game. The quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, can just about write his ticket anywhere in town today I’m sure. UNR’s team is just a great bunch of guys. They play so well together as a team.

Many of the team’s graduating seniors will undoubtedly go on to make millions of dollars in the National Football League. We will all watch their careers develop and remember when they and their teammates on this year’s Wolf Pack team had their 13-1 season that was capped by winning this Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in 2011. This season was definitely one to be remembered for a long time to come.

Wolf Pack fans are not just numbered as all being UNR graduates. Many of the fans have never even gone to a university anywhere. They are just fans of football and support the team in its endeavors. What a team to follow. The team truly played as a team. They showed all Nevadans what can be accomplished when you work together as a team.

All the men on the team are different, but they all focused on a common goal, which was to be a winner. Granted, they were directed by their various coaches, but nonetheless they achieved a common goal.

With our next session of the Nevada Legislature about to convene maybe all of our state legislators can take a lesson from the winning University of Nevada’s team. Maybe they can achieve common goals for Nevada during their legislative session, putting aside their differences and focusing on a common positive legislative goal that will benefit the deserving citizens of our great state.

Maybe, just maybe, politicians in Washington, D.C. will pick up on the winning ways of UNR’s football team, set aside their differences and achieve the same kind of legislative win for all the citizens of these United States. We citizens can only hope.
