Some fourth-quarter offensive woes cost the Spanish Springs girls basketball team Thursday in its final game of the 16-team Lady Bulldog Winter Classic, hosted by Folsom (Calif.) high school. A slow start didn't help either and the Cougars were saddled with a 61-51 loss by Colfax, Calif.

Spanish Springs took a 44-39 lead into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 22-7 in the final eight minutes and was handed its second non-league loss of the season by Colfax. The California school had already beaten Spanish Springs, 42-29 on Dec. 3 at SSHS.

Colfax jumped ahead 19-8 after the first period, but Spanish Springs stopped the bleeding by trimming the Falcons' lead to 27-20 by halftime. The SSHS squad exploded for 24 third-period points to take the lead, before its late collapse.

Sam Owens had 14 points to lead Spanish Springs, while Lyndsey Anderson and Riley Holladay chipped in 13 and 11 respectively.

The tournament concludes the non-league schedule for the Cougars. Spanish Springs (7-7, 1-3) has 12 games left, all conference clashes. The next one is Tuesday at home against Galena at 6 p.m.
