RENO — The Washoe County School District board of trustees President Estela Gutierrez was recognized by the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce this week as the recipient of the 2011 Raymond I. Smith Civic Leader of the Year Award. She was honored at the chamber’s annual chairman’s office party on Thursday at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino.

“Estela Gutierrez is this year’s recipient of the Civic Leader of the Year Award because she shares the Reno Sparks chamber’s passion for a community that values education, that challenges the status quo and that realizes that education and economic development are intrinsically linked,” said Tray Abney, director of government relations for the Reno Sparks chamber. “Her work and advocacy on behalf of the youth of the Truckee Meadows proves that she is dedicated to ensuring our continued economic vitality.”

Gutierrez and her husband, Jesse, are devoted advocates for the Latino community and co-founders of the Mariposa Dual Language Academy, a local charter elementary school that operates in English and Spanish. Gutierrez also founded the first Latino Leadership Program for the Hispanic Chamber and is the founder of the Youth and Latina Professional Leadership Program for Nevada Hispanic Services.
