In October, financial crimes detectives with the Reno Police Department began an investigation into an elder exploitation case. During the investigation, police learned that the 89-year-old victim was receiving hospice care when her wedding set was removed from her hand and replaced with a piece of costume jewelry by the suspect while she was providing care to the victim.
The victim died on Sept. 1. Later that day, the suspect, Michelle Smith, pawned the wedding set for $500. The set, consisting of a solitaire and band, has an estimated value of $15,000 to $18,000. Both have been recovered. The suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday.
