SPARKS — A fugitive was captured by Sparks police 11:42 p.m. Sunday but not before nearly hitting an officer with a stolen car while trying to get away.

On Sunday, Sparks Police Department patrol officers found a 1995 White Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been reported stolen. The suspect in that case, Joshua Newport, 37, was reported to be armed. Newport was still at large, having previously been the suspect in an SPD SWAT call with an active warrant out for his arrest and wanted by the Nevada Department of Parole and Probation. Officers had just set up a perimeter on the parking garage at John Ascuaga's Nugget when officers saw the white Jeep Cherokee exit the garage.

Several officers attempted to stop the Jeep when Newport began to flee. Newport lost control of the Jeep at Victorian Plaza Circle and Victorian Avenue. It appears that Newport tried to steer the Jeep into a marked police patrol vehicle while the officer was trying to exit the driver’s side. The Jeep struck the patrol vehicle in the front end, knocking the officer to the ground. Newport then tried to flee on foot but officers chased him down and took him into custody.

The officer struck by Newport received very minor injuries and was later treated and released from Northern Nevada Medical Center. Newport suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Renown Medical Center by REMSA. Newport will be booked into the Washoe County jail upon his release on the parole department warrant, as well as battery with a deadly weapon, DUI drugs, eluding and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Sparks Police Department.
