RENO — Scraps Dog Company & General Store will open an expanded location at 7675 S. Virginia St., Suite A, at the beginning of 2011.

Owner Travis Wong said the larger store is at the other end of the Longley West Plaza where Scraps has been open for seven years. The new location will occupy 6,000 square feet, an expansion of 3,600 square feet from the current store’s size.

“It’s kind of one of those things where these (companies) keep coming up with more and more products,” Wong said of the need to grow.

Scraps also has a store location at MaeAnn Avenue and Robb Drive and a bakery at the Sparks Marina. Wong also owns Discount Pet Food on Prater Way in Sparks. He expects to open the larger Scraps store in south Reno on Jan. 1. The existing store in the shopping center will remain open until the new store is ready.

Two additional permanent employees have been hired to work at the larger Scraps store, Wong said, adding to the current six workers.

Billing the store as employing “local pet professionals,” Wong said Scraps advocates for pet nutrition by carrying healthy dog food and specializing in allergy diets, helping patrons pick the right food for their animals.
