The Sparks Railroaders wrapped up their regular season with a 3-1 road win at Whittell in Sierra League boys prep soccer action Thursday.

The match concluded the regular season for Sparks (11-3-3 overall, 7-2-3 Sierra League), which will open the 3A North regional playoffs Wednesday at Fallon. First kick against the Greenwave is 2 p.m.

On Thursday at Stateline, NV, Sparks broke a 0-0 tie when Hector Hernandez found the back of the net thanks to a Kevin Partida assist.

The score became 2-0 when Whittell scored an own goal at the 34-minute mark. The two-goal margin stayed intact through

halftime and well into the second half.

In the 68th minute, Whittell trimmed the gap to 2-1, but the host Warriors could get no closer. Sparks tacked on an insurance goal in the final minute of play. Edgar Casillas handled the scoring honors on the final Railroaders' tally.

•In the girls match, Whittell captured a 1-0 win over Sparks, eliminating the visiting Railroaders from playoff contention.

Whittell managed to snare the lone goal of the conference clash in the 55th minute. The Warriors got the goal when Marlo Smith buried a penalty kick in the Sparks net.

The match ended the season for Sparks, which finished league play 3-7-2.

"Our girls played their best game," Sparks coach Jerry Miller said. "We passed well. We possessed well. We had good communication and out-shot them 10-3, but we couldn't get any breaks ... The girls didn't give up and they played hard the whole game. I guess we'll come back and try again next year."
