STAR PEAK CANYON — Additional information has been released about an Oct. 20 shooting involving police.

On Thursday, officials identified the man who confronted Bureau of Land Management (BLM) rangers and Pershing County deputies near Highway 400. Richard Stanley Cranston, 61, fired multiple shots at law enforcement officers and was killed in the return fire.

According to police, Cranston had been squatting in the Star Peak Canyon area for several months. BLM and Pershing County sheriff’s deputies were attempting to evict Cranston from the area when he fired multiple shots at the officers. Cranston was uncooperative with negotiation attempts and fired at the officers.

Anyone with information about the incident or might have had contact with Cranston in the Star Peak Canyon area is asked to call 328-3320 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
