On Oct. 18 at about 11 p.m., the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a lost hunter in the area of Hays Canyon in northern Washoe County.
The man had been hunting with his son and two grandsons when he departed at 5:30 p.m. to prepare dinner. The rest of the party followed 20 minutes later and found the subject was not at the campsite. After several hours of searching, they contacted the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for help.
Early the following day, the ATV the hunter was riding was located by airplane approximately eight miles from the initial search area, apparently abandoned. Additional resources were requested to help, including additional aircraft and search dogs. A request also was put out to other agencies and jurisdictions to search the vast, rugged terrain.
On Thursday at 10:52 a.m. the subject was located by a member of the family who was on horseback. The missing man was dehydrated and had minor cuts and abrasions but otherwise was in good condition.
The subject was found 1.8 miles southeast of the ATV. He had traveled approximately 50 miles by ATV, according to the odometer, and an unknown number of miles on foot.
