The fine points of pet acupuncture
RENO –– Dr. Diana Drumm at Lakeside Animal Hospital once treated a 4-year-old Doberman pinscher that veterinarians called a “wobbler.” He had a condition in which he lacked coordination and couldn’t walk. Steroids didn’t work, but a treatment of acupuncture and herbs did the trick, Drumm said. “After one visit, he was stronger, he could stand on his own, he was completely coordinated and he’s now coming in only five times a year,” she said. “H...

Loreen Waterman learned quickly when she moved onto her ranch in Spanish Springs seven years ago that she couldn’t leave her puppy unsupervised. As she unloaded her car one day, her Papillion, Sophia, went down the driveway and was taken by a coyote. It didn’t take the Watermans long to realize they would need to provide protection for their pets with strong fences and locks on coops. “You just can’t make mistakes because (the coyotes) know it...

Free the ferrets frequently for fun
Blankita thought about a career as a high-flying acrobat, but one drop from a few bales of hay and the subsequent sore back made the little white ferret quickly reconsider its line of work. “(Ferrets) have no fear,” said Blankita’s shelter owner Lisa Watson of Fallon. “They don’t understand the difference between a 2-foot drop or a 20-foot drop. … (Blankita) was tender and sore for a while, but she pulled through. They bounce back fairly good....
