The Spanish Springs football team's dreams of a season-opening win fell about three yards short Friday night. A swarm of Damonte Ranch tacklers brought down Cougars quarterback Hunter Fralick at the 3-yard line with no time left on the clock and the visiting Mustangs hung on for a 32-27 non-league prep football victory.

Spanish Springs spikers down Reno
Spanish Springs managed to knock off Reno, 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24 in the High Desert League opener for both prep volleyball teams. The match was originally scheduled for the week of the WCSD's new fall break in mid-October so the two schools agreed to move the match and keep the break open.

It's Week 2 of the high school football season but two of the Rail City's three prep programs have not suited up in a game. The smoke-infested skies over the Truckee Meadows forced athletic officials at Spanish Springs and Sparks to cancel their season openers due to health concerns and no make-up dates will be set.
